Gimme gimme symphonies, gimme more than the life i see [dan black - symphonies]

Oh God, I couldn't sleep... Whenever there's something important to do, I stay up even later than usual. For example, I have to wake up at 9 A.M. today, and was planning to sleep around midnight (so I can get my 9 hours of beauty sleep which I desperately need right now since my skin is just so irritated, and the bags under my eyes have become gigantic.. camping backpacks). Well, now it's 5:30 A.M. and there's no chance of me getting any decent sleep at all, and my entire schedule is off. Meh.

Okay.. hmm, I guess I could complain about the amount of homework that needs to be done still... I could get all stressed out and freaky but I think I'll stay calm for this one night. I'll get stressed tomorrow night instead, after work at least. Looking forward to that. /sarcasm :D

S M O O O T H  T R A N S I T I O N

Just recently met up with one of my oldest friends at Metrotown in Burnaby. I haven't seen her in a while, over a year actually. We became really good friends after I moved to Langley when I was 10, which is weird, because she admitted that while I was at Maywood Elementary in Burnaby, she couldn't stand me. She told me this a few years after the move. Her exact words were "I hated you, hahahahahahahahahaha".

Anyway, I had a miserable Grade 6 year at my new school. I was basically the outcast. There was only one other Chinese girl besides me, but she was also one of the kids who made my life pree crummy. Yadayada boring shit. I'm just glad I had somebody, even cities away, to talk to; to survive with.

I remember calling Nancy every day after school that year so we could watch Teen Titans together, and make commentary to each other as we watched. Good show, good times hahah. And through all this shit, that's what I remember the most, just talking on the phone for hours with her, my bestie.

Oh and the countless bands and graphic websites we'd tried to start (we sucked at both hahaha what? I'm being honest 'kay?). On this recent visit I asked her why we'd wanted so much to be in a band. She said we wanted to be famous. She told me about the lyrics she found in her diary from way back when, and told me she couldn't rhyme at all. I still have a few sheets of our lyrics... Reading over them makes me laugh and cry.

(I still want to be famous though. I didn't say that, but I thought that. Does that make me immature still?)

I thought the visit would be awkward (I had such an awkward visit with another haven't-seen-you-in-a-while-friend and it was the most weirdest meet-up of my life), since we haven't talked in so long, but it wasn't. It was fun to chat and try to get to know each other's "new" lives. I told her she hadn't changed, and she said I didn't change, but I think we both have changed majorly... for the better. She's going to the University of Ottawa, and taking political science! I think that's just fricking amazing.

Compare the Sixth Grade versions of ourselves with our Present versions of ourselves, and it's just like... Wow, we're so different. But not too different that we're unrecognizable to each other...

It's like... Well, we're not exactly mature in any way (yet?). We made some lame jokes here and there and talked about boys too. Okay, we're basically the same, except she's fucking 170+ cm tall now, like a model or something (SO jealous here). And I'm... okay I'm about the same height hahahaha. But like, our tastes in music, in clothing, in friends, in food, in everything... How did we become these people?

I love you Nancy! Sister from another mister. Okay I know you're stalking my blog on and off, don't even try to hide behind this wall of text, I can see you with my X-ray vision. <3

i was starving... had about only 5 bucks to spend on food tho so KFC ftw!
pwetty girl <3

hahahahahaha oh man i actually wanted to buy a hat.. not enough money..
we share a scarf cuz we're cool like that
We parted and it seemed like we'd only started talking; the hours felt like mere minutes. Am I being too sappy here? Good.

The ride home wasn't too bad either. I looked over the pictures we took and LOL'd on the skytrain. Fun stuff... people looking at me like I was on drugs or something. No, I wasn't.
view from the skytrain on the way home; rly love vancouver, city of glass
waiting for the bus, which i happened to miss by 5 mins.. had to wait 45 mins = =

It was a great day and a great night (: Can't wait to see you again, Nancy, my love! (I sound so creepy ahah... AWESOME. ANYWAY. GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY. HOPEFULLY. I WANT SLEEP AUGH.)

Love,
Mimi.

so you decided to see me out of the blue / should i let you come over [yuna - decorate]

I hung out with my bestie F. this Saturday (March 19th). We had some sushi, and walked around in the cold. I ate an ice cream sandwich, and froze my butt off at the elementary school playground. I love this girl, seriously. Went to her house and panicked about the supposed "Supermoon" and impending earthquake at 9:30 P.M... which didn't happen, THANK GOD.

I love you, bb <3 You are an amazing friend and gorgeous girl. Don't even give him another thought because if he's worth it, he'll do the right thing.

Can't believe I'm graduating in another three months! How did I become 17 all of a sudden? When did this happen? How am I suddenly an adult? (Well, almost, hahah). This is all so strange to me.

I'm gonna miss a lot of people when I leave this town, that's for sure! Especially Flora <3
But I'm also relieved to finally break off with some people whom I've been meaning to disconnect with for a while now.

REVIEW:
Hair Bun Sponge
bought from Mexy Shop (online) for $8.00 CAD.

PROS
- it's cheap
- it WORKS
- the retailer ships it quickly (I received my whole package in less than two weeks)

CONS
- the fabric is kinda cheap (there are some strings hanging out of the seam)
- no choice of size or patterns (even though the website says I can choose from SMALL or LARGE, there isn't an option to do so, so it automatically checked out the LARGE for me)

My rating: ★★★★☆
If there were a variety of patterns to choose from, different sizes to choose from, and better quality fabric, this product would've received full five stars.

Note: Different retailers/suppliers sell different kinds of bun sponges. Some might be better than others, and some might have more choices than others. Depends on retailer. This review is only for the Mexy Shop hair bun sponge.

UPDATE'D

Heya guys! Just some news I wanna share with y'all, since I haven't blogged for a while. A... very... long while. /facepalm. So... good news or bad news first? Okay, let's start with the good news, work our way up to the ungood/unbad news and then slowly move into bad news bears territory.

Good news: I'm admitted to the faculty of science at UBC! Just found out today, and by gosh by golly I was excited. I checked my application status at my school's library so I think I ran over a few Grade 8's on my way out, due to my overwhelming excitement. Heh.

Neutral news: UBC is still reviewing my supplementary application for the Sauder School of Business, so fingers crossed! Business is my 1st choice, so... I'm really hoping I get in. If I don't, I guess it's science pour moi :3

Bad news: THE WORLD IS ENDING IN 2012. I ONLY HAVE 3 SHORT MONTHS TO ENJOY MY POST-SECONDARY ACADEMIC CALLING, AND THEN, KABOOM, THE END, LA FIN.

Oh just kidding, there aren't any bad news. Hah. The look on your faces. Well, if I could see the look on your faces, I would say "Hah, the look on your faces".

OKAY! For this post, I'm going to host the second Soyconfessions outfit showdown (like the one I had last summer). Your assignment? (A) Try to guess how much each article of clothing cost, and (B) try to guess which outfit was cheaper. Then simply scroll below the picture for the answer (:

Tips: 1) Remember I am the Queen of Cheap. If it ain't cheap, it ain't chic. That's what Grammy Mimi always told me. (Well not really, but you get my point. Right? Right.)
2) I do thrift.
3) I also like retail.

4) I also shop online.
4) These are really unhelpful tips :/

5) Okay, I'll stop.

LET THE SHOWDOWN BEGIN
#1

...
...
...
Cropped tee: Unlabeled, FREE (swapped with a girl online)
Acid-washed Shorts: Urban Planet, $10
Knit Sweater: Thrifted @ Value Village (labeled Aeropostale), $7.99
Outer Cardigan: Sirens, $10
Vintage Chain Bag: FREE (giveaway from another blogger)
Wedge Boots: Eleventwentytwo, $35 w/ FREE shipping

TOTAL COST: $62.99

 #2
...
...
...
Black Maxi Dress: Hand-me-down from coworker, FREE
Checkered Structured Cardigan: Mom's closet, FREE
Black Backpack: Thrifted @ Salvation Army, $10.99
Cutout Heels: Army & Navy (labelled Gianni Bini), $39.00
TOTAL COST: $49.99

And Outfit #2 is the winner! Boy, wasn't that fun. (If you said "NO", a little piece of me just died inside. Actually, I could care less. Well, I kinda do care. Just kinda. If this post bored you out of your mind, don't hesitate to drop me a comment saying "YOU SUCK". I will respond by sucking less in future posts.)
Thanks for playing, lovelies (; Have a good week. Spring break in four days!!!

love,
Mimi.

P.S. Next post: Review on the Hair Sponge, bought here.

canadians can do it better

Well, no offense to non-Canadians or anything, but the Canadian music scene is definitely one of the best, in my opinion. Anything from the Zolas to Said the Whale to Mother Mother to Metric to Hedley to a whole lotta other artists, some of which I have yet to hear; I should get on that, eh.

Just found a site that highlights some Southern Ontario artists, so wanted to share: Southern Souls. Don't be fooled by the sappy name, just click on this link and have a listen (or a few listens, rather, 'cause it's like an assorted platter of music, so you should have a tiny bit of this and that for taste).

REVIEW-TIME-SHA-LA-LA-LA
The Body Shop "Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner"
Priced at $11.00 CAD + tax. 250 mL.
Excerpt from the Body Shop website:
Best if you want to: Tone your skin with a new "shake to activate" refreshing toner that removes traces of cleanser, make-up and impurities while leaving skin looking matte.

How it works:
-Lemon tea tree and Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya contain anti-bacterial properties that help fight blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.
-Tamanu oil from Madagascar has a soothing effect and helps to calm irritation and redness.
-Corn starch powder mattifies the skin.
    My rating: ★★★☆☆

    My thoughts:
This toner claims to purify my skin with the lemon and tea tree oil ingredients, and then mattify my skin with the corn starch. I've been using this toner for about two weeks (my regular astringent ran out so I decided to go out and get this one to try it) and:
    1) My skin doesn't feel purified after use.
    2) This product dries out my skin (when I use it with my regular regimen), which does not look good once makeup is applied.
    Dickinson's Witch Hazel Astringent
    3) It cost twice as much as my regular astringent, Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel ($5.99 from Walmart; picture on the left), comes in half the amount, and has half the benefits (that I've experienced).

If you're expecting a really awesome toner, then you'll be disappointed. However, if you've been using some crap toner like rubbing alcohol (omg, please don't use rubbing alcohol as a toner; I've heard that some people use it and I really think that's stupid... Alcohol in excessive amounts dries out your skin and should never be used on the entire face!) or even no toner at all, then you can spare $11 CAD to buy the Tea Tree Toner. However, don't expect amazing results.

I recommend the Dickinson's Astringent 1000x over this toner, not only because Dickinson's is half the price but also because of the benefits of witch hazel for acne/irritated skin. Tea tree oil on the other hand might be too irritating for some acne-prone skin, and usually, acne already causes skin to be more sensitive than usual so to add more irritants onto the skin would make things even worse.

I expected the Tea Tree Toner to perform a lot better because I raved about the Body Shop Tea Tree Face Mask in another post, but the effects (or lack thereof) really let me down.

    More informative posts to come!

    love,
    Mimi.
